IT 270 Milestone One Guidelines and Rubric: Initial Site Planning

Overview: The final project for this course is the creation of a website. Throughout this course, there will be key milestone activities for you to take advantage of so that you have adequate time to research, analyze, and put together your website. These milestones are designed to build upon each other so that you can get started on key aspects of your final project and receive valuable feedback from your instructor for improving upon your work as you construct your website. Remember to always review your Final Project Guidelines and Rubric document for how you will be scored on your final draft submission.

It is always critical to decide and plan in advance for the content and rough design of your final project website. To ensure that all students are starting from the same point for this and future planning check-ins, assume that your final project is based on the scenario of your “imaginary uncle” asking you to design and build the first website for his small business. For the purposes of your project check-in at this point, fill in the following fields:

FOCUS

It is important for all websites to have a focus on a product or service, even those websites dedicated to a small business—it helps your audience immediately identify what they came looking for. Keeping in mind the scenario as described above, identify the type of business that your “uncle” owns. Briefly describe the focus of the website. What type of business does your “uncle” own? (2–3 sentences)

PLEASE INSERT YOUR ANSWER IN THE SPACE BELOW:

My uncles business is a video game business, where he sells video game systems and games for the systems. He has also just recently started selling video game memorabilia, for instance he now sells T-shirts, figurines, stuffed animals of gaming characters as well as posters.

PURPOSE

Once you determine whether you will be highlighting one or more products or services on your “uncle’s” website, you should also have a purpose in mind for highlighting these products/services. Why should visitors (and potential customers) care about these things? Why should a website be built for this business? (2–3 sentences)

PLEASE INSERT YOUR ANSWER IN THE SPACE BELOW:

Visitors should be interested in the products of my uncles business because it reaches out to a broader audience of gamers, whether it’s for a specific system such as Xbox or PlayStation or a Nintendo fan, the website will allow gamers to purchase from their choice of system, also the website will reach out to the collectors as well, toys and clothing are a big deal in the video game kingdom. A website should be built for this business because it will reach out to millions of gamers around the world.

DESIRED RESULTS

Nearly every website is results-oriented. For example, Amazon.com does not want you to leave the site until after you have made a purchase. The same holds true here—what is the result, or the most compelling action, you want visitors to take after visiting your “uncle’s” website? (2–3 sentences)

PLEASE INSERT YOUR ANSWER IN THE SPACE BELOW:

What the business wants so a purchase is made is when the user wants to back out of the website another portion of the site will open up showing the buyer that there is other merchandise to be purchased hopefully this will interest the user into making a purchase. By showing the buyer that there is many other video game related merchandise to be bought that they will purchase for themselves or for someone else as a gift.

TARGET AUDIENCE

Most websites are created with a target demographic in mind—for example, sites that cover video game news typically include content for, and are designed to appeal to, young men in their late teens and early 20s. Provide a brief description of the target audience you have in mind for your uncle’s website. (1–2 sentences)

PLEASE INSERT YOUR ANSWER IN THE SPACE BELOW:

The target audience for this website is for the gaming community. The website will allow video games and systems to be bought, as well as show the gaming collectors they can purchase gaming memorabilia.

Sometimes you need to consider the geographical location of your target audience. For example, a website selling mountaineering or orienteering equipment is more likely to target their potential audience living in New England or the Rocky Mountain states. Is this an aspect of your audience you should consider as well? (At minimum, one sentence or less)

PLEASE INSERT YOUR ANSWER IN THE SPACE BELOW:

With the gaming community being so worldwide it is hard to make the site a geographical location for the audience. So instead the site will focus worldwide as the site that sells hard to find games as well as memorabilia.

Estimated typical number of visitors per month or year (approximate number):

PLEASE INSERT YOUR ANSWER IN THE SPACE BELOW:

With the gaming community being in the millions, on average we are hoping for at least 37,000 to 85,000 visitors a month to start, then once the site becomes known to the community we are hoping that it moves to 150,000 to 300,000 a month.

Remember to review your instructor feedback on this milestone. As you finalize elements of your site, one of your guidelines for submission is to include basic comments in your code that identify how your work in the milestones and instructor feedback informed key features or function choices on your site.
