Ashford ANT 234 Week 4 Discussion 2 Cultural Hierarchies
The structure of power within the Inuit society is complex, as the Inuit are traditionalists, and because of such, the tribe elders are crucially-important, since they are considered by the Inuit people to be the greatest source of knowledge and wisdom, pertaining to the governance of the ritualistic practices, educations and hierarchal systems of Inuit society. The significance is evidenced by author Kenojuak Ashevak, whom painted a portrait entitled ‘Wisdom of the Elders,’ premised the Inuit cultural makeup, hierarchal roles of government and importance of the elders within the culture – this is expressively illustrated through the depiction of the painting, which depicts an elderly person dressed for the arctic weather, which is relevant because it reinforces the cultural notion of the important roles elders play within the Inuit culture.
